About the tun
From Old English tunne and Medieval Latin tunna, the tun gave English both a cask and, through its close cousin ton, a way of rating ships by how many tuns of wine they could carry. The spellings were once used interchangeably, and a full tun of wine weighs about one long ton of 2,240 pounds.
Its size drifted. The tun began at 256 wine gallons and was cut to 252 before the fifteenth century, a number divisible by seven and many smaller integers. A customs paper of 1507 gives 240 gallons. The Queen Anne gallon of 231 cubic inches, adopted in 1706, made a tun roughly a cylinder 42 inches across and high, and the 1824 imperial system redefined it as 210 imperial gallons.
The US figure of 252 gallons is about 953.9 litres (953.92 L as used here), while the imperial tun is only about 0.08 percent larger. It tops the English wine ladder: two butts, three puncheons, four hogsheads or six tierces, with the same arithmetic working in either gallon.
