About the US dry quart

Quart comes from the Latin quartus, a fourth, by way of French, and a quart is meant to be a quarter of a gallon. American usage splits the unit in two, though, because a liquid gallon and a dry gallon were never the same. The dry quart is 1/32 of a US bushel, 67.200625 cubic inches, about 1.101 L. The liquid quart is 57.75 cubic inches, about 0.946 L, so the dry one is roughly 16 percent larger.

Britain avoids this split, since the imperial system has one quart for both liquids and solids, 69.35 cubic inches or about 1.1365 L, and it is a little larger than the American dry quart. Because gallons of many sizes were once in use, quarts have also come in many sizes, and the dry quart itself sometimes varied by commodity. Berries and small produce are the usual goods sold by it. NIST lists it as 1.101221 L.
