About the US bushel

English statutes tied the bushel to the cylinder-shaped Winchester measure, 18.5 inches across and 8 inches deep, which holds about 2,150.42 cubic inches. The United States kept that volume, 35.239 L, when Britain did not: the Weights and Measures Act 1824 replaced it with an imperial bushel of 8 imperial gallons, about 36.37 L. As a result, an American and a British bushel differ by about 3 percent. The name probably comes from Old French boissiel, a little box.

The bushel entered England after the Norman Conquest as a step between the pound and the ton, and it was later redefined by weight, 56 avoirdupois pounds in the sixteenth century. Today it is largely a mass measure for grain, quoted in standard weights per commodity: 60 lb for wheat and soybeans, 56 lb for shelled maize, 48 lb for barley and 32 lb for oats in the US. Commodity futures prices on American exchanges are still quoted per bushel.
