About the cord
Firewood and pulpwood in the United States and Canada are sold by the cord, a name thought to come from the string once used to check the size of a pile. A full cord is a neat stack 4 feet high, 4 feet deep and 8 feet long, or 128 cubic feet, about 3.62 cubic meters. Because the figure counts the gaps between logs, a cord holds noticeably less solid wood than its volume suggests.
Sellers often offer a face cord instead, a stack 4 by 8 feet in face area but only as deep as the log length, commonly 16 inches, which makes it about a third of a cord. Names such as rick and face cord vary from place to place, and Measurement Canada recognizes the cord, the stere and the cubic foot as legal sale measures.
Older European cords varied widely. Before 1795 the French corde ranged from roughly 2 to 5 steres by region, and the stere, a cubic meter of stacked wood, was coined that year to replace it. One stere is about 0.276 cord.
