1 metric ton equals 1.102311311 short tons (rounded).
How to convert metric tons to short tons
To convert metric tons to short tons, multiply the number of metric tons by 1.102311311. The factor is rounded to 10 significant digits. To go the other way, multiply short tons by 0.90718474.
short tons = metric tons × 1.102311311
Example: 10 metric tons = 11.02311311 short tons.
About these units
Metric Ton (t)
1,000 kilograms (about 2,204.6 lb), also spelled tonne. Used for cargo, grain and vehicle weights outside the US.
Barrels gave the tonne its name. The word goes back to a Germanic root for a large cask, the tun, and a full tun could easily weigh around a tonne. In English this became ton; the spelling tonne has been used in France since 1842, where it replaced the older tonneau, and pre-metric French tonnes were 2,000 livres, about 979 kg. Once the metric system took hold, the tonne was fixed at 1,000 kilograms, which is the mass of roughly a cubic metre of water.
The unit is accepted for use with the SI, and its symbol is a lowercase t with no period. Because it sits close to the old English ton, the two get confused: the short ton used in the US is about 10 percent lighter than a tonne, while the long ton differs by less than 2 percent. NIST calls the unit the metric ton, and the spelling tonne is rare in the US. Very large quantities are stated in prefixed forms such as the megatonne, which equals a teragram. In explosives, a tonne of TNT is taken as about 4.2 gigajoules.
1 metric ton = 1,000 kilograms (exactly).

Short Ton (ton (US))
2,000 pounds (907.18 kg). The ton used in the United States.
Wine casks lie behind every kind of ton. The word comes from tun, the term for the largest cask, and a tun of wine held roughly 2,000 pounds and took up about 60 cubic feet of cargo space. The short ton of 2,000 pounds keeps that round figure. It is used mainly in the United States and in some Canadian industries, while most of the world uses the tonne or, in the Commonwealth, the long ton.
The short ton is about 907 kg, roughly 10 percent less than a metric tonne, so the two should never be swapped when reading a statistic. The long and metric tons, by contrast, differ from each other by less than 2 percent. Weighing cargo on land is easy, but ships are traditionally described by displacement in long tons, so American shipping and naval documents can contain both kinds of ton at once. A freight bill may also use a measurement ton, which is a volume of 40 cubic feet. When writing for an international audience, spelling out short ton avoids confusion.
1 short ton = 907.18474 kilograms (exactly).
