About these units

Crore (crore)

Indian subcontinentCurrent unit

Ten million (10⁷), or one hundred lakh. Written 1,00,00,000 in the Indian numbering system.

Sanskrit had separate words for most powers of ten from 100 up to 10 to the 19th. The crore comes from one of them: the Prakrit kroḍi, which derives from the Sanskrit koṭi, and in Hindi and Urdu it is karoṛ. In Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam the cognate is kōṭi. Outside South Asia, koṭi travelled mostly through Buddhist texts, and in Indonesian and Malay keti means 100,000, a lakh, instead of ten million.

A crore is 100 lakh, or 10,000,000, and is written 1,00,00,000 in Indian grouping. It is the natural unit for large sums of money in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, so 150,000,000 rupees is 15 crore rupees. For amounts in the trillions, the system's next named units, arab and kharab, are rarely used, so people say lakh crore for 10 to the 12th. Nepal and Sri Lanka both used the system in the past but have moved to international numbering in recent years.

1 crore = 10,000,000 pieces (exactly).

Half Dozen (½ doz)

US & ImperialCurrent unit

Six items.

Half a dozen is six, and the phrase is best known from an idiom: six of one, half a dozen of the other. The saying works because the two quantities are identical, merely named differently, so it dismisses a choice between two options as pointless. The unit rests on the dozen, which came into English from Old French douzaine and Latin duodecim, and halving twelve leaves a number that still divides evenly by two and three.

In counting terms, half a dozen is 6 pieces or 3 pairs, and two of them make a dozen. A gross contains 24 half dozens, and a great gross contains 288. Because the larger bulk units are all built from twelves, half a dozen fits into every one of them with no remainder.

1 half dozen = 6 pieces (exactly).
