Dunams to Hectares (dunam to ha)

1 dunam equals 0.1 hectares exactly.

1 dunam = 0.1 hectares

How to convert dunams to hectares

To convert dunams to hectares, multiply the number of dunams by 0.1. This factor is exact. To go the other way, multiply hectares by 10.

hectares = dunams × 0.1

Example: 10 dunams = 1 hectare.

About these units

Dunam (dunam)

Middle EasternTraditional unit (still used in some regions)

Exactly 1,000 m² in the modern metric standard. Older Ottoman dunams varied by region, from about 900 to 2,500 m².

Ottoman Turkish dönmek means to turn, and the dunam probably follows the Byzantine Greek stremma, a land measure of similar size. Its legal definition was forty standard paces in length and breadth, but the real area differed from province to province, from just over 900 square meters in Ottoman Palestine to about 2,500 in Ottoman Iraq. Roughly it matched the land an ox team could plough in a day.

Today the metric dunam is standardised at exactly 1,000 square meters, a tenth of a hectare, and that is the figure used here. It is the working unit in Israel, Palestine, Syria, Iraq and Turkey, and the Balkan dunam is mostly the same, with local exceptions such as about 1,600 square meters around Leskovac in Serbia. Under the British Mandate the dunam was 919.3 square meters until the metric version was adopted in 1928. Cyprus lists its donum at 1,338 square meters, and the old Ottoman stremma in Greece is given as about 1,270.

1 dunam = 1,000 square meters (exactly).

Hectare (ha)

Metric (SI)Current unit

10,000 square meters (2.471 acres). The standard unit for land and agricultural areas outside the US.

Hecto plus are: the name was coined in French, and are itself comes from the Latin area, meaning an open space. The French law of 18 Germinal, Year III (7 April 1795) defined the are as 100 square meters, and the hectare followed as 100 ares, or 10,000 square meters. The unit is therefore a product of the original French metric reforms rather than of later SI work, which is one reason its official status has always been slightly awkward.

When the SI was set up in 1960 the are was not recognized, and the hectare was classed as a non-SI unit accepted for use with it. In practice it is the standard unit for land ownership, planning and agriculture in the European Union, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, while the United States and Myanmar stay with the acre. A hectare is a square 100 meters on each side, about the size of Trafalgar Square, and equals roughly 2.47 acres. One hundred of them make a square kilometer.

1 hectare = 10,000 square meters (exactly).
