US Quarts to Cubic Inches (qt to in³)

1 US quart equals 57.75 cubic inches exactly.

1 US quart = 57.75 cubic inches

How to convert US quarts to cubic inches

To convert US quarts to cubic inches, multiply the number of US quarts by 57.75. This factor is exact. To go the other way, multiply cubic inches by 0.01731601732 (rounded).

cubic inches = US quarts × 57.75

Example: 10 US quarts = 577.5 cubic inches.

Pints, quarts, gallons and fluid ounces differ between the US and the UK. Units are labeled 'US' or 'imperial' to avoid confusion.

About these units

US Quart (qt)

US customaryCurrent unit

One quarter of a US gallon, 0.946353 L (32 US fluid ounces).

Quart is a word about fractions. It comes from Latin quartus, meaning one fourth, by way of French, and it was always meant to be a quarter of a gallon. Since gallons differed over the centuries, quarts did too. The US liquid quart is 57.75 cubic inches, about 0.9464 liters, while the imperial quart is a quarter of the 4.54609-liter imperial gallon, about 1.1365 liters. Canadian French even uses pinte for the imperial quart.

Older English trade also produced odd cousins. The Winchester quart was a big bottle holding two imperial quarts, later metricated to 2.5 liters, and the reputed quart of about 0.758 liters was once a standard British wine bottle size. In the United States a quart still means a carton of milk or cream or a tub of ice cream. Americans also use a separate dry quart, about 1.101 liters, for berries, so a quart of strawberries is larger than a quart of milk.

1 US quart = 0.946352946 liters (exactly).

Cubic Inch (in³)

US & ImperialCurrent unit

Exactly 16.387064 mL. Used for engine displacement in the US and for small mechanical parts.

Cubic inch is a unit defined by a ruler. Take an inch, build a cube, and its volume is exactly 16.387064 milliliters under the modern definition of the inch as 25.4 millimeters. Its main role in history is as the building block behind other US volumes: the US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, so a cubic inch is exactly 1/231 of a gallon. Even the 42-gallon oil barrel works out to precisely 9,702 of them.

The cubic inch survives most visibly in American engines, which are abbreviated c.i.d. for cubic inch displacement, while the rest of the world and many modern automakers speak in liters. A 5.7 liter engine is about 350 cubic inches, a conversion made easy by the exact factor of 16.387064. Small mechanical parts are also sized in cubic inches in North America.

1 cubic inch = 0.016387064 liters (exactly).
