Miles to Decimeters (mi to dm)
1 mile equals 16,093.44 decimeters exactly.
How to convert miles to decimeters
To convert miles to decimeters, multiply the number of miles by 16,093.44. This factor is exact. To go the other way, multiply decimeters by 0.00006213711922 (rounded).
decimeters = miles × 16,093.44
Example: 10 miles = 160,934.4 decimeters.
About these units
Mile (mi)
5,280 feet or 1,760 yards, exactly 1,609.344 meters. This is the statute (international) mile used on US and UK roads.
A thousand paces gave the mile its name. It descends from the Latin mille passus, the Roman mile, by way of Old English mil and Middle English myle. For centuries after Rome, miles of many lengths coexisted; a sixteenth-century Mercator map, for example, shows small, medium and large Flemish miles on a single scale bar. The English statute mile was fixed by an Act of Parliament under Elizabeth I in 1593, which declared that a mile contains eight furlongs, or 5,280 feet.
The 1959 international yard and pound agreement made that mile exactly 1,609.344 meters. A slightly longer US survey mile, about 1,609.347 meters, lingered in American land surveys and was slated for retirement from 1 January 2023. Today the mile is the road unit of the United Kingdom, the United States, Liberia and Myanmar, along with several territories such as the Bahamas, Belize, Guam and the US Virgin Islands. In Canada it survives chiefly in rail transport and horse racing.

Decimeter (dm)
One tenth of a meter (10 cm). Rarely used in everyday practice.
Deci, meaning a tenth, was among the prefixes of the first metric system, and Wikipedia's prefix table dates it to 1795. The decimeter (dm) is therefore 10 centimeters, 100 millimeters or about 3.937 inches. Of all the early metric multiples it is the one that shows up least in daily speech, since people reach for centimeters or meters instead.
Its real importance is as the edge of the liter. A liter is defined as one cubic decimeter, so a 10 cm cube holds exactly one liter. Between 1901 and 1964 the liter was defined through the kilogram instead, which made it very slightly different from the cubic decimeter. The unit also survives in a few specialist places. Chemists record the path length used for specific rotation in decimeters, and ship draught marks are given in decimeters in most of the world. A standard compact disc, at 120 mm, is 1.2 dm across.
1 decimeter = 0.1 meters (exactly).
