Newtons to Tons-force (short) (N to tonf (US))

1 newton equals 0.0001124044715 tons-force (short) (rounded).

1 newton = 0.0001124044715 tons-force (short)

How to convert newtons to tons-force (short)

To convert newtons to tons-force (short), multiply the number of newtons by 0.0001124044715. The factor is rounded to 10 significant digits. To go the other way, multiply tons-force (short) by 8,896.443231 (rounded).

tons-force (short) = newtons × 0.0001124044715

Example: 10 newtons = 0.001124044715 tons-force (short).

About these units

Newton (N)

Metric (SI)Current unit

The SI unit of force: the force that accelerates one kilogram by one meter per second squared. About the weight of a small apple.

Isaac Newton gave his name to the unit for his second law of motion, force equals mass times acceleration. Metric engineers needed a force unit that fitted the metre-kilogram-second system, and the CGPM standardized one in 1946; the 9th CGPM in 1948 adopted the name newton, with symbol N. Before that, many metric users measured force in kilograms-force, which confuses weight with mass, and CGS users had the much smaller dyne.

One newton is the force that gives a one-kilogram mass an acceleration of one meter per second every second. For scale, a 200-gram apple weighs about 1.96 N on Earth, so a newton is roughly the weight of a small apple. It equals 100,000 dynes and about 0.225 pound-force. Forces in the thousands are written in kilonewtons. Because the newton is built directly from kilograms, meters and seconds, it slots into formulas for pressure, energy and power without any conversion constants.

The newton is the reference unit for force on this site.

Ton-force (short) (tonf (US))

US customaryTraditional unit (still used in some regions)

2,000 pounds-force (8.896 kN), the weight of a short ton.

A ton-force turns a ton of mass into the force it exerts under standard gravity, and the short ton-force is the American version. It equals 2,000 pounds-force, or 8.896443 kilonewtons, which is also about 907.18 kilogram-force. The word ton is ambiguous, so the short qualifier separates it from its neighbors.

Two relatives share the name. The long ton-force, based on the 2,240 pound British ton, is 9.964 kilonewtons, and the metric tonne-force, equal to 1,000 kilogram-force, is 9.80665 kilonewtons. A short ton-force is therefore about 0.893 of a long ton-force and about 0.907 of a tonne-force.

All three use the standard gravity of 9.80665 meters per second squared, so none depends on the place where a load is weighed. American engineers meet the unit in press ratings, crane and hoist capacities and structural loads, and it is one kip doubled. SI documents give the same figures in kilonewtons.

1 ton-force (short) = 8,896.443231 newtons (approximately).
