About these units
US Gallon (gal)
Exactly 231 cubic inches or 3.785411784 liters (128 US fluid ounces). About 17% smaller than the imperial gallon.
The US gallon is a survivor of English wine trade. Around 1706, a statute in Queen Anne's reign fixed the wine gallon at exactly 231 cubic inches, settling confusion among the competing gallons for wine, ale and corn. British colonies in North America used that wine gallon, and in 1824 Britain replaced all its gallons with a new imperial one while the United States kept the old measure. It was adopted as the legal US standard in 1836 and is still defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, or 3.785411784 liters.
That makes the US gallon about 17 percent smaller than the imperial gallon, a difference that explains why American and British fuel-economy figures cannot be compared directly. Everyday uses are milk jugs, paint cans and gasoline pumps. One gallon divides evenly into four quarts, eight pints, sixteen cups and 128 fluid ounces. A gallon of water weighs a little over 8 pounds, an easy figure to remember when loading a car with water jugs.
1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liters (exactly).

US Dry Barrel (bbl (dry))
Exactly 7,056 cubic inches (115.628 L). The US standard barrel for dry goods such as fruit and vegetables.
A barrel for dry goods is the only cask in this family defined by a clean cubic measure rather than by gallons. The US standard is 7,056 cubic inches, which converts to about 115.6 litres (115.63 L as used here) and equals roughly 3.3 US bushels. Unlike the many English cask names built on the wine gallon, this barrel descends from the corn measure used for grain, fruit and root crops.
The word barrel entered English in the Middle Ages from French baril, a term whose own origin is unknown. In American commerce the dry version served for flour, cornmeal, sugar, lime, cement, salt and produce such as apples, though cornmeal, for instance, is reckoned by weight at 200 pounds per barrel.
The fixed cubic-inch definition keeps the unit stable, and it is regularly confused with the liquid barrel of 31.5 gallons, which is a little larger at about 119 litres. Modern trade has largely replaced both with sacks, cartons and metric weights, though the dry barrel remains defined in US customary tables.
1 US dry barrel = 115.6271236 liters (approximately).
