Light-minutes to Miles (lmin to mi)

1 light-minute equals 11,176,943.82 miles (rounded).

1 light-minute = 11,176,943.82 miles

How to convert light-minutes to miles

To convert light-minutes to miles, multiply the number of light-minutes by 11,176,943.82. The factor is rounded to 10 significant digits. To go the other way, multiply miles by 8.946989587×10⁻⁸ (rounded).

miles = light-minutes × 11,176,943.82

Example: 10 light-minutes = 111,769,438.2 miles.

About these units

Light-minute (lmin)

AstronomicalCurrent unit

The distance light travels in a minute (about 18 million km). The Sun is roughly 8.3 light-minutes from Earth.

Sunlight takes about 8.3 minutes to reach Earth, so the light-minute is the natural scale for the inner solar system. Its figure is exactly 60 light-seconds, which comes to 17,987,547,480 meters or about 18 million kilometers. The unit has no formal standing in the SI and no single inventor. It simply follows from the fixed speed of light, and it turns up in popular astronomy, in discussions of signal delays and in tables that give planetary distances as travel times.

Distance and delay are the same number in this unit, which makes it handy for spacecraft work. A signal to a distant spacecraft therefore cannot be answered instantly, because every light-minute of separation adds a minute each way. One astronomical unit is about 8.317 light-minutes, and Saturn's orbit at its closest approach to the Sun lies near 1.25 light-hours. Larger distances usually move up to light-hours or light-years.

1 light-minute = 17,987,547,480 meters (exactly).

Mile (mi)

US & ImperialCurrent unit

5,280 feet or 1,760 yards, exactly 1,609.344 meters. This is the statute (international) mile used on US and UK roads.

A thousand paces gave the mile its name. It descends from the Latin mille passus, the Roman mile, by way of Old English mil and Middle English myle. For centuries after Rome, miles of many lengths coexisted; a sixteenth-century Mercator map, for example, shows small, medium and large Flemish miles on a single scale bar. The English statute mile was fixed by an Act of Parliament under Elizabeth I in 1593, which declared that a mile contains eight furlongs, or 5,280 feet.

The 1959 international yard and pound agreement made that mile exactly 1,609.344 meters. A slightly longer US survey mile, about 1,609.347 meters, lingered in American land surveys and was slated for retirement from 1 January 2023. Today the mile is the road unit of the United Kingdom, the United States, Liberia and Myanmar, along with several territories such as the Bahamas, Belize, Guam and the US Virgin Islands. In Canada it survives chiefly in rail transport and horse racing.

1 mile = 1,609.344 meters (exactly).
