Lieues to Feet (lieue to ft)

1 lieue (Paris league) equals 12,788.95216 feet (rounded).

1 lieue (Paris league) = 12,788.95216 feet

How to convert lieues to feet

To convert lieues to feet, multiply the number of lieues by 12,788.95216. The factor is rounded to 10 significant digits. To go the other way, multiply feet by 0.00007819248889 (rounded).

About these units

Lieue (Paris League) (lieue)

French (Ancien Régime)Historical unit (no longer in standard use)

2,000 toises, about 3.898 km: the Paris league of 1674. The later post league (lieue de poste, 1737) was longer, at 2,200 toises or about 4.288 km.

Lieue descends from the Celtic league that the Romans adopted as the leuga. The Gallic version, about one and a half Roman miles, replaced the Roman mile as the official road distance in Gaul and Germania under Septimius Severus. In France the word later covered several different distances rather than one.

The figure used here, about 3,898 metres, is 2,000 toises, which Wikipedia's article on traditional French units calls the Paris league of 1674. The lieue de poste, which measured stages on the royal coach and mail routes, was set at 2,200 toises in 1737, about 4.288 kilometres. Wikipedia's league article lists the post league at the shorter 3,898 metres, so its two articles disagree about which league carried that name.

Other French leagues ranged from 10,000 to 14,400 pieds, or roughly 3.25 to 4.68 kilometres. The metric lieue of exactly 4,000 metres was used in the customary system between 1812 and 1840. Since the unit was never standardized, any conversion to kilometres should name which lieue is meant.

1 lieue (Paris league) = 3,898.07262 meters (approximately).

Foot (ft)

US & ImperialCurrent unit

12 inches. Defined as exactly 0.3048 meters. Still the standard unit for height, altitude in aviation and room dimensions in the US and UK.

Human anatomy supplied the idea: an adult foot is roughly 15 percent of body height. Ancient cultures turned that into standards, but not the same one. The Greek pous was about 302 mm, the standard Roman pes about 295.7 mm, and a Harappan foot of about 335 mm has been reported from the Indus Valley. Historically, a foot fell somewhere between about 250 and 335 mm. Charlemagne tried to standardize units around 790 with little lasting success, and in 1593 English law fixed the statute mile at 5,280 feet.

The modern foot dates from the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement, which defined the yard as exactly 0.9144 meter and so the foot as exactly 0.3048 meter; the UK adopted it on 1 January 1964. The US survey foot, defined in 1893 as 1200/3937 meter, was deprecated on 31 December 2022. Feet remain in everyday use for height and rooms in the US, and ISO shipping containers are defined in them. Aviation altitudes use them too: flight level 330 means 33,000 feet.

1 foot = 0.3048 meters (exactly).
