About these units
Dozen (doz)
Twelve items. Eggs, rolls and many goods are still sold by the dozen.
Dozen entered English from Old French douzaine, a group of twelve, built from douze, which comes from Latin duodecim, plus a suffix that makes a collective. Twelve earned its popularity partly by dividing evenly: it splits into halves, thirds, quarters, and sixths, which helps when sharing goods. One suggestion is that the roughly dozen lunar months in a solar year made twelve one of the earliest groupings.
Even in a decimal age, dozens persist in commerce, often for foods such as eggs. Larger multiples extend the system by twelves: a gross is 12 dozen, or 144, and a great gross is 12 gross, or 1,728. The idiom six of one, half a dozen of the other uses the unit to say two options come to the same thing. Twelve also gave English the baker's dozen, which adds one more.
1 dozen = 12 pieces (exactly).

Quire (qr)
25 sheets of machine-made paper (24 for handmade and some specialty papers). One twentieth of a ream.
Quire comes from the Latin quaternum, by fours, which passed through Old French into Old English. The name made sense in manuscript days, when a quire was usually four sheets folded once, giving eight leaves. Once paper let binders stitch five to seven sheets at a time, the link to four faded.
Today a quire is normally 25 sheets, a twentieth of a 500-sheet ream. Handmade and specialty papers sold in 480-sheet reams still use quires of 24, which was also an older measure in Britain and the United States. Other counts have existed, including 15, 18, and 20, depending on the paper type. The damaged outer quires of a packed ream, called cassie or cording quires, held 20 sheets each. Blank-book binders sometimes use the word for 80 pages.
1 quire = 25 pieces (exactly).
