About the arroba (Brazilian)
Arabic ar-rubʿ, a quarter, is the root of arroba, which was a fourth of a quintal in the Iberian trade world. Portugal carried the unit to Brazil, and in Portugal the arroba was about 14.7 kilograms, while parts of Spain such as Galicia, Aragon and Andalusia used about 11.5.
Brazil's modern metric arroba is 15 kilograms, the figure used here, and the agricultural sector still relies on it, mainly for cattle and cotton. Elsewhere in Latin America the value differs: 12.5 kilograms in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, while Bolivia's national arroba is a volume of 30.46 liters. Because the symbol @ is also the word arroba in Spanish and Portuguese, the same sign serves as the email at-sign in those languages.
