Liter Per Mil (L/mil)
Liters used per 10 km (one Scandinavian 'mil'). Swedish and Norwegian drivers quote fuel use in liters per mil.
1 liter per mil = 10 kilometers per liter (exactly).
About the liter per mil
Fuel economy in Sweden and Norway is traditionally given as the number of liters burned per mil, the Scandinavian unit of 10 kilometers. That makes it a cousin of the European liters per 100 kilometers figure, just one tenth as large: 0.6 liters per mil is the same as 6 liters per 100 kilometers.
Like consumption figures elsewhere, it counts fuel per distance, so a lower number means a thriftier car. This is the reverse of kilometers per liter or miles per gallon, which count distance per fuel, so a conversion has to invert the value rather than scale it.
The unit survives because the mil itself survives in everyday Scandinavian speech, even though kilometers appear on road signs. Writers there still use it in casual talk about cars, alongside odometer readings quoted in mil.
